Mediation Review Process

The purpose of the Oklahoma Dental Association (ODA) Mediation Review system is to review matters concerning misunderstandings, inadequate communications, and serviceability between patients and their dentists. Mediation Review is offered without cost to help with such problems if the dentist is a member of the Oklahoma Dental Association. The object of Mediation Review is not focused on which of the two parties is correct, but instead what will be required to resolve the disagreement.

Mediation Review is not a court of law and has no disciplinary function. The procedure is neither adversarial nor punitive. It exists to educate, explore options, clarify and recommend a fair solution. The Sub-council on Mediation Review and local committees consist of ODA member dentists who volunteer their time to review and assist patients in their disputes concerning quality of care and appropriateness of treatment.

Criteria for case acceptance:

  • The dentist must be an ODA member.
  • The case must concern itself with Appropriateness of Treatment and/or Quality of Care.
  • Receipt of request for mediation must be within two years of completion of treatment.

Cases not accepted for Mediation Review:

  • Complaints against dentists who are not ODA members.
  • Billing issues and/or fee disputes.
  • Complaints of poor customer service or practice management.
  • Complaints concerning a staff's behavior.
